Calorie

By definition a calorie is the energy it takes to raise the temperature of 1 gram of water 1 degree Celsius. 
1 Calorie = 4.18400 joules
The Calorie is a pre-SI metric unit of energy. It was first defined by Nicolas Clement in 1824 as a unit of heat.
A pound of fat stores about 3500 calories so, in order to lose a pound of fat, you need to burn an extra 3500 calories. To lose a pound in one week, that would mean creating a calorie deficit of 500 calories per day with diet, exercise or both.

Importance in Daily Life
Calorie is Energy. The human body requires energy for a variety of activities such as breathing, pumping blood, walking, sitting, thinking, etc. Every action that you perform requires a certain amount of energy. Even when the body is at rest, it still requires energy, albeit at a lower amount, to ensure that circulation and respiration is maintained. Energy is also expended to maintain the body at the optimum temperature for survival. Young children and infants also require energy to aid their body’s growth process.


Amount of Calories per Day

  • The minimum Survivable calories varies between individuals, with 600 to 1000 given as a standard Range, according to the US Army Survival Handbook.
  • The USDA recommends adult males eat between 2000 and 2500 calories.
  •  Their recommendation for Women is between 1800 and 2300 daily Calories.



Calorie deficiency
The most obvious sign of a calorie deficiency is loss of body fat.
Other symptoms include fatigue, an inability to stay warm, diarrhea, loss of appetite, irritability, and apathy, sometimes leading to unresponsiveness (stupor). People feel weak, unable to do their normal activities. The number of some types of white blood cells decreases.


Good Sources

Vegetables & Fruits are suitable because  55% of Energy should come from Carbohydrates, which provide about 4calories per gram.
15 percent of our calories each day should come from protein sources (4cal/gram)
and

30 percent of our calories should come from fats (9cal/gram)
(According to USDA dietary guidelines.)
